A missionary couple from the US visited the chapel. They will be serving until October but aren't yet fluent enough in Japanese to fully share their strong testimony. Nevertheless they have secured members by touching on a topic common to all people: family.
Discussing such matters, at times recalling memories of difficult times and painful experiences, allows commiseration and sharing. Indeed, it would seem that although people outwardly long for a hero--bright, resplendent and perfect--all that might be needed is the empathy of an ordinary human being, one who can say 'Yes, I can relate--I have suffered, just like you. And I can be shoulder for you.
Surely this is in the spirit of our Lord, Jesus Christ--a best friend, an unfaltering shepherd, a solid rock--who suffered physical agony and humiliation alone and died a gruesome death amongst thieves, yet rose in full glory to live at the right hand of our Heavenly Father.
Such is what we should strive to emulate; to walk and live the path of Christ, not shying away from hardship. Thus will we grow in strength to give comfort to others and in worthiness to share his heavenly abode.
